How to install LED ceiling panels: the complete guide

You have received your SunshinePanel LED panels, and it is time to install them. Good news: installation is much simpler than you might think. You do not need to be an electrician; a DIYer can do it in under an hour.

This LED ceiling panel installation guide covers three scenarios: an existing suspended ceiling (the most common), surface mounting with a frame, and special configurations. We explain everything step by step.

1. What you need before you start

Required materials

  • The printed LED panel (60×60 cm or 120×60 cm, depending on your model)
  • An LED driver: it converts 230V to the direct current suitable for the panel. Each panel needs its own.
  • A mounting kit: recessed for a suspended ceiling, or surface-mounted if you do not have a suspended ceiling.
  • A Phillips screwdriver
  • A terminal block or Wago connector for the wiring
  • A voltage tester (optional but recommended)

Preliminary checks

Before removing an existing panel or drilling anything:

  • Switch off the power at the circuit breaker for the relevant circuit. Not just the switch—the circuit breaker.
  • Check that your suspended ceiling is the standard 600×600 mm format (standard in France for commercial premises). If you have a residential plasterboard ceiling, you will need the surface-mounting kit.
  • Locate the electrical supply at the ceiling: you need a live wire (brown or red), a neutral wire (blue), and ideally an earth wire (green/yellow).

Unsure about your electrical installation? Call an electrician. A simple installation costs €80–150 and helps avoid unpleasant surprises.

2. Suspended-ceiling installation (recessed)

This is the most common situation: you are replacing a white suspended-ceiling panel with a SunshinePanel printed LED panel. It is also the simplest.

Step 1: Remove the old panel

Lift the existing panel by pushing it upward, then slide it to the side. It simply rests on the T-bars of the suspended ceiling. If a white LED panel was already installed, disconnect it first (with the power off!).

Step 2: Install the driver

The LED driver is placed above the suspended ceiling, next to the panel location. It must not rest directly on the panel; place it on a rail or on an adjacent panel.

Connect the power cable (230V) to the driver: live to L, neutral to N, earth to the earth symbol. Use Wago connectors; they are cleaner and safer than traditional terminal blocks.

Step 3: Connect the panel to the driver

The driver's output (low voltage, generally 30–42V DC) connects to the panel connector. It is a simple clip, so it is impossible to connect it the wrong way round.

Step 4: Position the panel

Pass the driver's cable through the opening, then place the LED panel on the suspended ceiling rails. It must lie perfectly flat, with the edges aligned with the rails.

Step 5: Test

Turn the power back on and switch it on. The image appears instantly, with uniform backlighting. If the panel does not light up, check the driver connection (live/neutral reversed) and the connection clip.

Total time: 15–20 minutes for one panel, including the driver.

3. Surface-mount installation (visible frame)

No suspended ceiling? No problem. The surface-mounting kit transforms your panel into a wall light or ceiling light.

Principle

The kit consists of a white metal frame measuring 60×60 cm (or 120×60 cm), secured to the ceiling or wall with 4 screws. The panel is then clipped inside the frame. The driver is housed in the space between the frame and the ceiling.

Steps

  1. Mark the fixing points on the ceiling using the frame as a template. 4 holes are sufficient.
  2. Drill and insert wall plugs suitable for your surface (concrete, plasterboard, wood).
  3. Secure the frame to the ceiling with the supplied screws.
  4. Install the driver inside the frame, then connect it to the mains.
  5. Clip the panel into the frame. The side springs hold it in place.

Total time: 30–45 minutes depending on the type of ceiling.

4. Electrical connection and LED driver

Which driver should you choose?

Each 60×60 panel consumes approximately 40W. It requires a driver with equivalent or slightly higher power:

Configuration Required power Recommended driver
1 60×60 panel 40W LIFUD or BOKE 40-42W driver
1 120×60 panel 72W 75W driver (please contact us)
Pack of 4 panels 4 × 40W = 160W 4 individual drivers (1 per panel)
Pack of 9 panels 9 × 40W = 360W 9 individual drivers

Important: each panel has its own driver. Do not connect several panels to a single driver, as this would overload the circuit and reduce its lifespan.

Dimmer / dimming

Our DALI/PUSH drivers are compatible with most dimmers on the market. The DALI protocol is the standard for professional lighting. PUSH mode (push button) is suitable for residential installations.

5. Multi-panel configurations: packs of 4, 6 and 9

The appeal of packs is that they create a cohesive visual composition. The image continues from one panel to the next for a panoramic effect.

Pack of 4 panels (120×120 cm)

2×2 layout. Ideal for a home office area, reception area, or a waiting room. The “skylight” effect is immediate, and it is often the best compromise between size and impact.

Pack of 6 panels (180×120 cm or 120×180 cm)

3×2 or 2×3 layout, depending on the desired orientation. Perfect for a wide hallway or a meeting room.

Pack of 9 panels (180×180 cm)

3×3 layout, total transformation. It covers 3.24 m² of ceiling, equivalent to a small room. The effect is spectacular in windowless spaces.

Installation tip

For a multi-panel pack, start with the center panels, then work outward. This allows you to adjust the alignment gradually. Check that the image is oriented correctly before installing the panels (there is an arrow on the back of each panel).

6. The 5 mistakes to avoid

  1. Forget to turn off the power. It may seem obvious, but this is the main cause of incidents. Turn it off at the circuit breaker, not the switch.
  2. Place the driver on the panel. The driver heats up slightly during operation. Place it beside the panel, never on top of it, as this could damage the printed image over time.
  3. Force the panel into the frame. If it does not fit easily, the frame is probably misaligned or the dimensions do not match. Our panels measure exactly 595×595 mm (standard 600×600 suspended ceiling).
  4. Connecting several panels to a single driver. Always use one driver per panel. It may be tempting to save money, but this reduces brightness and lifespan.
  5. Neglecting the ground connection. Even if the panel works without a ground connection, the NF C 15-100 standard requires one. If your installation has no ground connection, have an electrician carry out the work.

7. Frequently asked questions

Do you need to be an electrician to install an LED panel?

No. If you know how to replace an outlet or a light fixture, you can install an LED panel. In a suspended ceiling, it is even simpler: no drilling, just wiring and clipping it into place.

How long does installation take?

15–20 minutes per panel in a suspended ceiling. 30–45 minutes for surface mounting (drilling + frame). A pack of 9 panels in a suspended ceiling can be installed in 2 to 3 hours, including the driver.

Can the panels be installed on a wall instead of the ceiling?

Yes, with the surface-mounting kit. The effect is different—more like a luminous picture than a skylight—but some customers love it, especially in entrance halls.

Are the panels compatible with all suspended ceilings?

With all exposed-grid suspended ceilings in the 600×600 mm format (such as Armstrong, Knauf AMF, etc.). This is the standard in offices, shops, and public buildings. For a plasterboard ceiling (BA13), use the surface-mounting kit.

Can the panel be easily replaced later?

Yes. This is one of the advantages of the standard 60×60 format: you can change the design in 5 minutes. The driver and kit remain in place.

What is the lifespan?

50,000 hours on average, or more than 10 years in office use (10 hours/day, 5 days/week). The printed image does not deteriorate over time. More details in our article LED Panel Maintenance and Lifespan.

How do you maintain the panels?

A dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth is all you need. Do not use chemicals or solvents. The surface has a dust-resistant treatment, so cleaning every 6 months is more than sufficient.

How do you install a 60×60 ceiling panel?

The 60×60 cm panels install directly into a standard suspended ceiling grid (T-bar 600×600). First, install the T-profiles (main and cross tees) at the desired height, securing them to the existing ceiling with threaded rods. Once the grid is in place, the SunshinePanel LED panels clip into each cell by hand. Allow approximately 1 hour for a 4-panel structure (120×120 cm), including the grid.

Can LED panels be connected in series?

No. Each panel must have its own driver; this is parallel wiring, not series wiring. Connecting several panels to a single driver may underpower them (insufficient brightness) and shorten their lifespan. Series wiring is intended for low-voltage LED strips, not high-power LED panels.

How do you install an LED panel on a ceiling without a suspended ceiling?

Use the SunshinePanel surface-mounting kit (available in 60 × 60 and 120 × 60 cm). This white aluminum frame attaches directly to the ceiling with 4 screws and wall plugs. The panel clips inside the frame. The driver fits in the space between the frame and ceiling (3 cm clearance). The result is neat on concrete, plaster, or wood ceilings, with no cutting or suspended ceiling required.

Surface-mounted installation without a suspended ceiling

Do you live in an apartment with a concrete or plaster ceiling and no service void? You don't need a suspended ceiling to enjoy a SunshinePanel luminous ceiling. Surface-mounted installation lets you install your LED panels directly against the existing ceiling, using a white aluminum frame (RAL 9016) that neatly surrounds the panel and holds it flush against the ceiling.

Typical use cases

  • Tenants: installation without structural drilling (mounted with standard wall plugs), and can be removed without leaving marks after the lease ends.
  • Concrete ceiling or Haussmann-style apartment: no service void required; the panel remains visible and decorative.
  • Quick renovation: installation in under an hour per panel, with no masonry or drywall work.

Required materials

  • 1 SunshinePanel 60 × 60 surface-mounting kit (aluminum frame + 4 screws + wall plugs)
  • 1 drill + bit suitable for the ceiling material
  • 1 SunshinePanel 60 × 60 cm LED panel
  • 1 DALI/PUSH LED driver (1 per panel)
  • 2 × 0.75 mm² electrical cable between the driver and the panel

Surface-mounted installation steps

  1. Position the surface-mounted frame against the ceiling at the desired location. Mark the 4 fixing points.
  2. Drill the holes and insert the wall plugs. Screw the frame to the ceiling.
  3. Slide the LED panel into the frame, with the printed side facing down.
  4. Connect the panel cable to the driver (observe the + and − polarity).
  5. Secure the driver in the suspended ceiling or in a surface-mounted junction box.
  6. Power it with 230 V and test the lighting.

The SunshinePanel surface-mounted kit is available in 60x60 and 120x60 cm formats. It ensures a 0 mm gap between the panel and the frame for a clean final appearance, with no unwanted shadows along the edges.

LED panel connection and wiring

Each SunshinePanel LED panel is powered by direct current through a dedicated LED driver (supplied separately or as part of a bundle). Here is the standard wiring diagram:

Basic principle

  • The driver connects to the 230V AC mains on the input side (L, N, Earth terminals).
  • The panel connects to the driver's DC output (+ and - terminals).
  • Never connect a panel directly to the 230V mains: immediate risk of damage.

Single-panel wiring (PUSH mode)

  1. Switch off the power at the circuit breaker.
  2. Connect L (live) and N (neutral) from the lighting circuit to the driver's input terminals.
  3. Connect the driver's + output terminal to the panel's + terminal (red cable or + marking on the ribbon cable).
  4. Connect the driver's - output terminal to the panel's - terminal.
  5. To activate PUSH dimming: connect a standard push button between the driver's DIM+ and DIM- terminals. Short press = on/off. Long press = dimming from 0 to 100%.

Multi-panel wiring (DALI mode)

For packs of 4, 6, or 9 panels in the same space, the DALI protocol allows each panel to be controlled independently from a DALI controller. Each driver receives a unique address (0–63). The 2-wire DALI bus runs in parallel between all drivers. Bus power: 250 mA max. (self-powered bus).

If in doubt about the electrical diagram, consult a qualified electrician (NF C 15-100 standard). The SunshinePanel team is also available to support integrators with their projects.
