LED lighting for retail stores: boost your sales with light

Lighting is the only merchandising element that affects all products at the same time, at every moment. Yet most independent stores spend more on wall decoration than on quality lighting. That is the calculation turned upside down.

What lighting changes in retail

Product perception

With a CRI below 70 (low-end ceiling panel), colors look inaccurate. A navy-blue jacket appears black, burgundy fabric looks brown, and jewelry loses its sparkle. With a CRI of 90+, the product looks as it should. The difference between \"I love it in the store\" and \"disappointed at home\" is often found here.

Visit duration

Neuromarketing studies (Turley & Milliman, 2000) show that positive sensory factors increase the time spent in a store. Warm, uniform lighting (3,000 K) increases visit duration by 10 to 20%.

Memorability and return visits

A store with a strong visual identity (including its lighting ambiance) is memorable and encourages customers to return. A decorative ceiling panel (sky, nature, or brand pattern) creates this memorable visual reference.

Strategy by type of store

Fashion and ready-to-wear

  • 4,000 K (neutrality for color) or 3,000 K (premium ambiance)
  • Minimum CRI 90
  • Directional spotlights on featured racks
  • Decorative ceiling panel in the fitting room (sky) to increase the perceived space

Fine grocery and wine shop

  • 3,000 K essential (enhances food products)
  • CRI 90+
  • Dimmed ambiance (300–400 lux) for the atmosphere

Tech, electronics, sports

  • 4,000 K (clear light for readability)
  • 500-750 lux
  • Consistency first

FAQ

What CRI for a fashion store?

For a fashion boutique, a minimum CRI of 90 is required for accurate color rendering of clothing. A lower CRI distorts colors: a navy-blue jacket may appear black, and burgundy fabric may look brown. Returns due to “a different color from what I saw in the store” are often linked to a poor CRI. Sunshine Panel tiles all have a measured CRI >90.

What color temperature is best for a delicatessen?

For a delicatessen or wine shop, 3,000 K (warm white) is the ideal color temperature: it enhances the warm colors of food products (bread, cured meats, cheese, and wine) and creates a premium atmosphere. 4,000 K is too clinical for this type of store.

Does the display window need special lighting?

The display window is the most critical area: it is visible from outside and often competes with natural light. Opt for a higher light level (750 to 1,000 lux), a CRI of 90+, and a directional light source (spotlight or surface-mounted panel) for featured products. For the back panel of the display window, a decorative panel can create a sense of visual depth.
